Joy Air Compressors

Joy Air Compressors were introduced in 1955, by Joy Manufacturing Company in Western New York. The organization developed steam turbines, gas turbines, in-line centrifugal compressors, axial flow compressors and internal gear centrifugal compressors.

Joy then purchased a farmers field in Cheektowga, New York to further their research and development activities. By 1960, Joy was transformed into a factory producing centrifugal air compressors producing oil free air flow.

Cooper Industries Inc acquired Joy Air Compressors in due coarse. They now operate in various industries ranging from auto, glass and petrochemicals to textiles, electronics and energy.

These air compressors are now manufactured and marketed as Cooper Compressions Systems. They offer a wide range of oil free air compressors. The organization boasts ease of operation, convenient service and long product life.

The main advantages of using compressors from Cooper formerly Joy are as follows:

  • Low Maintenance cost as there are no parts which wear and require regular replacement.

  • Completely oil free, hence there is no scope of contamination due to oil.

  • Dampers are not required as these are free of pulsation.

  • Better control due to inlet guide vane control.

The two most popular product lines are:

    Reciprocating Compressors

These compressors use a reciprocating piston and include the following air compressors:

    WG72 – This is a 2-cylinder Reciprocating Compressor with a speed ranging from 600 to 1000 rpm.

    WH62 - This is a 2-cylinder Reciprocating Compressor with a speed ranging from 600 to 1200 rpm.

Axis 54 - This is a 4-cylinder Reciprocating Compressor with a speed ranging from 600 to 1500 rpm.

RAM 54 - This is a 4-cylinder Reciprocating Compressor with a speed ranging from 600 to 1500 rpm.

    MH66 - This is a 6-cylinder Reciprocating Compressor with a speed ranging from 600 to 1200 rpm.

    Centrifugal Compressors

The flagship product being theTurbo Air Cooled 2000 Centrifugal Compressor

This compressor is ideal for applications with limited or no supply of water. It uses the advanced air to air cooling technology.

The arrangement of air flow components is such that the flow of air is directed through each stage. This reduces the turbulence effectively. At each and every stage the pressure of air in increased by adding incremental energy. After each and every stage air is cooled. This is done using an in built after-cooler, which does away with the requirement of a pipeline cooler. This Joy Air Compressor boasts one of the lowest operation cost as it saves all the water related costs like water cost, pumping cost, water treatment cost, cooling system installation cost, water system maintenance cost and the cost of closed loop cooling system.

With its easy maintenance and simple installation, this compressor is extremely popular world-wide.

Even though it has been a long time since Joy was bought by Cooper Industries, still the brand name survives. A number of customers still demand this model for fulfilling their needs. The popularity has been further enhanced by the cult film Carnival of Souls, which shows a jackhammer crew using a portable Joy Air Compressor.
