Joy WG72 Air Compressor

An Oil Free Compressor

Joy WG72 Air Compressor was first introduced in 1955 by Joy Manufacturing Company. It is now manufactured and marketed as Cooper Compression Systems. This air compressor is a 2 cylinder system with a speed ranging from 600 to 1000 rpm. There is no pulsation and hence dampers are not required. They also boast a much better control due to the presence of an intel guide vane control.

The highly advanced Compass software is used to perfection for the sizing of the cylinder of this air compressor. Compass is an extremely user friendly, Microsoft and windows based software, which makes a preliminary cylinder selection and sizing. Then the user can include any other specific selections followed by detailed calculation ranging from performance curves and dynamic rod load calculations

Manufacturer Specifications

  • It uses an oil free reciprocating system.

  • It has 2 cylinder throws

  • It has a 7 inch stroke and the diameter of the rod is 2.75 inches

  • The Lube oil flow is 68 litres per minute and the Sump capacity is 132 litres

  • The connecting rod is heat treated, closed die forged and precision machined for pin lubrication.

Warranty

Six year warranty on these air compressors

Pros

  • Since the air compressors are completely oil free, there are no chances of contamination due to oil.

  • It boasts a total peak to peak, Internal Gas Rod Load of 150,000 pounds

  • The frame is of one piece and made of cast iron with steel plate covers making it extremely durable and long lasting

  • The crosshead guide is a removable, iron casting with an integral distance piece. An auxiliary distance piece is available to deal with corrosive gas service.

Cons

  • Special tools are needed for on field maintenance

    Joy WG72 Air compressor Review

The Joy WG72 Air compressor imposes a starting torque consisting of three different torques; compression, friction and inertia. Once it starts, friction becomes a minor concern but as the speed increases the gas flow through the system imposes a higher load. This compression torque is kept under control by specially designed bypass systems and unloader systems.

Inertia also has to be controlled as the speed increases and is dependent on the characteristics of the motor. Extremely heavy flywheels are not used and hence inertia is almost never a problem with these reciprocating air compressors. Hence these air compressors are ideally suited to minimize the start up torque and are therefore an extremely popular choice. Moreover these air compressors have a low maintenance cost they do not have any parts which wear with time and usage and require regular replacement. Hence, in the long run these air compressors end up becoming a good buy because of their combination of durability and efficiency.
