Air Compressor Tanks

One of the main components of any air system is air compressor tanks. The tank is where the air is stored and pressure is built. Air compressor tanks come in many sizes and shapes.

If we are talking portable air compressor tanks they are usually shaped as either horizontal cylinders or pancakes. In industrial applications the air compressor tanks can be enormous and usually are vertical to save space, but there are large tanks in horizontal formats.

The four popular styles of air compressor tanks are:

  • Vertical:which are tall and depending on their size can be very large. Almost always stationary. Very useful if establishing a large compressor operation in a smaller space, the vertical cylindrical shape is easier to locate and leave in a permanent location.

  • Horizontal tanks are very popular in all formats being portable and in large capacities stationary. Can be harder to find space for in a stationary location, as they take up more room being horizontal.

  • Pancake is a great style of tank for portable applications. It is small and flat like a vertical tank being compressed completely flat like a “pancake”. Offers good capacity and a small foot print. Very popular for nailer applications.

  • Wheelbarrow style is very popular for portable mobile applications. Usually in 5 gallon to 10 gallon capacities, offering 2 tanks one on either side of the barrow wheel. Great mobility and compact footprint.

There are portable air compressor tanks that do not need the air compressor attached once filled. These are only good as long as they have air in them and then they need to be refilled. There are very small air compressors and tanks that are used for air brushing and there are massive industrial air compressors and air compressor tanks that can output hundreds of cubic feet per minute over very long periods of time.

When choosing your compressor and tank, you need to consider the types of tools you are going to use. The appropriate air compressor tank should be attached to the compressor to allow for the right amount of air to flow through all of your air tools. Start with the pneumatic tool that uses the most air and rate the tank you need by that. The larger the air compressor tank the more cubic feet per minute you can supply to your air tools.

Additionally if you are using a portable system, consider your needs and room. A pancake shaped tank can do a fantastic job at saving space but may provide you with less pressure. When you start discussing portability and air compressor tanks, there are many companies who are in the running for high end quality products. DeWalt, Stanley, Bosch, Craftsman, Porter Cable. All of these companies have been in construction and home improvement product manufacturing for years. All of these companies sell various kits and packages of compressors, nailer's, air compressor tanks. All of their products are aimed at both the professional contractor and the do-it-yourselfer.

As with any product on the market today you can purchase so many different brands and makes. Remember to list your needs starting with your highest powered pneumatic tool. This will lead you in the right direction for finding the appropriate compressor and air compressor tank.
